Belly Binding After Birth: Is It Right for You?

Belly binding, or wearing a postpartum support garment, is a centuries-old tradition used across cultures to support healing after childbirth. Many new mothers wonder whether it’s necessary—and the answer is, it depends on your needs.

What it does:

  • Offers gentle compression for abdominal muscles
  • May reduce back pain or the “empty” feeling some report postpartum
  • Helps support organs returning to position

When to start:

Most families begin using wraps or bands around 24 to 72 hours after birth, depending on how they feel and the type of birth (vaginal or cesarean).

Types of wraps:

  • Medical-grade postpartum binders
  • Velcro waist belts
  • Traditional fabric wraps (speak to your midwife or doula for guidance)

Wear it for a few hours a day and monitor how your body responds. If you experience discomfort, consult your provider. In some cases, pelvic floor physical therapy is a better long-term solution.
