Writing out your birth preferences (sometimes called a birth plan) is a great way to prepare emotionally and logistically for your labor. It’s not about controlling the outcome—it’s about communicating your values and wishes.
Start with these questions:
- Who do I want present during labor and birth?
- Do I want to labor in water or try a water birth?
- How do I feel about pain medication vs natural management?
- Would intermittent monitoring make me feel more mobile and free?
- Do I want delayed cord clamping or immediate skin-to-skin?
Tips:
- Keep it flexible—birth is unpredictable
- Print a one-page version for your provider and birth team
- Review it in advance with your midwife or doula
Whether you’re birthing at home, a birth center, or a hospital, your preferences help create an empowering environment for one of life’s biggest transitions.
